They're baaaack!! I saw 2 red-winged blackbirds in my backyard today. I almost couldn't believe my eyes. We have had some pretty nasty weather for the last 2 days-I measured almost 12 inches of snow on my deck. To think that the red-wings have been migrating for weeks, all the way from the tropics, to show up in my backyard today in the middle of one of the worst snowstorms we've had this year boggles my mind. I felt so bad for them-I was sure they were starving-so I immediately put out fresh sunflower hearts in several of my feeders that I know they are capable of feeding from, and spread more on my deck. I know there are plenty of people out there that can't tolerate these birds, but they are not the awful pest they are made out to be. Think about it, you have just flown thousands of miles and haven't eaten in a long time. Wouldn't you eat just about anything you could find? I just know that Spring is just around the corner because the Red-winged Blackbirds are back!!
