designed to be an easy system to feed wild birds when used together. The cakes come in four different blends: Cardinal, Woodpecker, Multi-Bird and No-Waste. To attract a wide variety of wild birds, three cake blends can go onto the easy-to-clean feeder, which is made from durable plastic and includes a built-in perch, drainage holes to keep cakes dry, and a metal rod (with hanging hook) to hold cakes in place,

This month’s issue of Birds and Blooms – June 2010, features two of our newest hummingbird feeders as “Editor’s Picks”. The Hum Sweet Hum hummingbird feeder was featured in an earlier post – you can read more about it here. The other feeder is the Topfill Aster feeder from Perky Pet. Birdola “Rounds” em up

March 29th, 2010

Birdola the originators of the first wild bird seed cake has  rounded up their product line  with their recent introduction of Stackers.  A new and easier way to offer the birds in your backyard just seeds they want to eat. No fillers, and no undesirable seeds,  just the very best seeds your songbirds desire.

We…or I should say, the songbirds in our backyard had the privilege of field

Birdola Stacker

One of our 'field testers'

testing a number Stackers this last winter. Stackers are round and have a hole thru the middle, sort of like a donut which makes them easy to stack on the center post of Birdola’s new feeder.

We hung ours next to another feeder and within minutes we had our first tester, a chickadee. Now normally chickadees grab a seed and fly off to a nearby branch to eat then they return to the feeder repeating  process over and over seemingly expending more energy than they consume . Our chickadee chose a sunflower seed without the shell from a “No Waste”  Stacker and stayed right on the feeder eating till he was full. Within the first hour our Stackers had attracted, cardinals, nuthatches, tuffted titmice, and a downy woodpecker each choosing just the seeds they wanted to eat.

Watch here for the latest news on when Stackers will be available for sale. You can also send us an email  – birdwatcher@birdwatchers.com and you will be one to the first to know when Stackers are available for your songbirds.

Banner

March 8th, 2010

Thank you esigns.com !

We’ve never done a lot of signage around our store. A few handmade signs along with too many lame ink jet banners (read: tapped together 8 1/2″ X 11″ sheets of printer paper).  A custom professional banner was simply out of our league and more than our checking account could manage. Last October we held our 15th Annual Fall Seed Sale, and to celebrate the fact that our business had survived 15 years, Debbie wanted a nice sign (read: not another one of my tapped together banners ).

Thanks to esigns.com, googling ‘banner‘ and choosing which sign company to order from was the hardest part of the whole process.

Oh,… and our Fall Seed Sale?

A huge success!

House Wrens Make Great Neighbors

February 15th, 2010

A small brown bird that makes a nest of small sticks in a house with an opening
small enough to restrict a Sparrow. It’s range covers most of the Western
Hemisphere. Males will fill most any cavity they find with small twigs and sticks,
whether it is a house, an old woodpecker hole, or maybe even an old boot sitting out back. He then sings incessantly until he attracts a female, showing her each cavity he has filled. If she chooses one of his nests she will either use the nest he built and add a soft nest on top, or she will take all of his hard work and throw it
out and make her own nest.

Simply Irresistible

Simply Irresistible

We have a customer, David Dault owner of Focus Mold, who for over a year now has asked us just about every question known to man about hummingbird feeding. We’re not complaining mind you. we’ve enjoyed it as we’ve been on the inside of the development of the world’s most attractive hummingbird feeder, the Hum Sweet Hum.

What make’s it so attractive is it’s 400 brilliant red facets making it simply irresistible to hummingbirds. The raised facets also prevent rain water from entering keeping nectar fresh and flavorful and because the feeding ports are on top of these raised facets, bees can’t reach the nectar. A built-in ant moat prevents ants from overrunning the feeder. It’s large hanging rod not only makes it easy to hang but also allows up to 3 feeders to be hung from the same rod making room for dozens to feed at the same time. In areas where hummingbirds are less tolerant of each other, the 40 plus feeding ports keeps lone hummingbirds on the feeder longer as they move from port to port just as they would move from flower to flower, staying in view longer for more enjoyable viewing.

Easy testing of the Hum Sweet Hum at our store

Early testing of the Hum Sweet Hum at our store

We had the privilege of testing one of the first Hum Sweet Hum feeders last summer. After hanging one just outside our showroom window, it took all of about 10 minutes for a hummingbird to find it. Dault is extremely proud of his first feeder, made in the USA, and already has plans for a seed feeder. If it’s anything like the Hum Sweet Hum, Focus Mold is in for a sweet future.

Birdola Plus Seed Cake

Birdola Plus Seed Cake

Birdola was one of the very first products we sold when we opened our store back in 1995. Our daughter Stacey, who worked at a nearby pet food store told us about it. She said, “…you got’a carry it, it really sells well, birds love it, plus it’s made locally!” Birdola not only gave us a display but they gave us just the thing that every new business needs, net 30.

Birds are very selective eaters, the seeds some birds may desire are not desired by others and vice verse. When birds are at a feeder they sort thru the seeds tossing out the less desirable seeds, but with Birdola seed cakes birds
You can read more about Birdola here. Or if you want to try it for you birds you can buy it here.
